County Records in Columbia County

Columbia County maintains marriage and land records from 1853. Divorce and court records date from 1860. Probate records are also on file at the county courthouse in Magnolia. The county seat is Magnolia, and the county clerk's office there handles all these record types. When someone died with property in Columbia County, a probate case was opened. Those cases name the deceased, document the date of death, list surviving heirs, and often include details not found in any published obituary.

The circuit clerk's office maintains court filings separate from the county clerk. Both offices can be relevant depending on what type of record you are looking for. If a death led to contested estate proceedings or guardianship disputes, those records would be in the circuit court files. Routine estate administration would be handled through probate. Knowing the difference will save you time when you contact the courthouse.
